Abstract
This thesis contributes to both institutional economic theory (North, 1990) and the entrepreneurial ecosystem perspective (Stam, 2015), as the results reinforce the importance of context in entrepreneurial activity (Welter, 2011), especially regarding re-entry activity after business failure (Cope, 2011) and in adverse contexts (Shepherd & Williams, 2020). The quantitative results show that the role played by formal institutions is deficient in supporting entrepreneurs re-entering after business failure, especially in emerging economies. And the qualitative data also contribute to highlight the role of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and provide an inductive model demonstrating the role that these ecosystems can play in adverse contexts. This thesis also contributes to reinforce the importance of social capital in the entrepreneurial process (Baron & Markman, 2000), for example the role of family/friends, other entrepreneurs, mentor, in facilitating the reintegration process after business failure.
