Study on the relationship between reading habits and reading comprehension

Lidia Altamura

University of Valencia

This study examines the relationship between different reading habits, including possible differences in terms of the literary category and format in which it is presented (on paper or on screen), with reading comprehension on paper. The results of 604 male and female students from 10 schools in the Valencian Community, Spain, are studied. Data were collected on the reading frequency of different genres and the use of the internet. Likewise, a distinction was made between habits referring to school tasks and those frequent habits in free time. The results show the absence of significant differences in reading habits depending on the sociodemographic variables of the students (gender, educational level and language). Finally, it is evident that reading books in free time in primary school and reading on paper in secondary school are significant predictors of students' reading comprehension levels. On the other hand, it is observed that recreational internet use in primary school is negatively associated with reading comprehension on paper
