Impact of a didactic device for the comprehension of multimodal texts in multicultural classrooms of 6th grade

Schools currently focus its energies on improving the levels of comprehension of texts where the written verbal system prevails. At the curricular level in basic education, the subject of Language and Communication does not explicitly consider working with multimodal texts. However, in subjects such as English, history, mathematics, visual arts and technology, the curriculum makes explicit the work with multimodal texts. However, these subjects do not focus on working with visual reading based on visual comprehension strategies.

For this reason, this research proposal seeks to implement a didactic device to enhance the comprehension of multimodal texts in multicultural classrooms of 6th grade (11-12 years old) in the subject of Language and Communication, given that international and national evaluations show a low reading performance of students at this level. Therefore, it is intended to demonstrate the effects of this pedagogical mediation device, integrating in it the cultural relevance of multimodal texts to the learner, visual reading strategies, metacognitive reading strategies and direct teaching modeling as an instructional factor. The didactic device that emerges from the research intends to establish an impact on the comprehension of multimodal texts aimed at classrooms with integration of migrant population. The proposal also intends to establish an instructional model of reading mediation that favors text comprehension in students.

 

Bio

Tricia Mardones Nichi is Fondecyt Postdoctoral Researcher ANID 2022, CIAE, University of Chile. Ph.D. in Educational Sciences with a specialization in Intercultural Education, specialized in interdisciplinary research with internal and external funds, whose topics are oriented to the field of education, both in intercultural competences, pedagogical competences, and language didactics. Currently, her research is oriented towards the validation of a didactic device with cultural relevance for the comprehension of multimodal texts. She has postgraduate experience in teaching qualitative research methodology and thesis direction in doctoral programs. She is linked to the international network RedINTER Red Latinoamericana de Estudios Interculturales e Interdisciplinarios.
