Full Professor at the University of Valencia, she has carried out her teaching and research activity uninterruptedly for 46 years at the Unit of Biophysics and Medical Physics of the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. She joined the University of Valencia in 1979 as an assistant lecturer for practical classes, attaining the position of Full Professor after an extensive academic career, with six recognized research evaluation periods (one of them in knowledge transfer) and six five-year teaching evaluation periods. Her teaching activity includes undergraduate courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Podiatry, Speech Therapy, Optics and Optometry, and Data Science, as well as official master’s degrees in Physiology and Medical Physics. She has been Director of the University Master’s Degree in Medical Physics since 2011. In addition, she has taught and directed several postgraduate lifelong-learning programmes at the University of Valencia, including the Master’s Degree in Orthodontics, the Specialisation Diploma in Radiation Oncology, and the ECOTSID University Certificate (Ultrasound for Advanced Technicians in Diagnostic Imaging). She has actively participated in educational innovation projects, teaching enhancement programmes and conferences on university teaching, and has published several articles on this subject. She is a member of the Association of University Professors of Radiology and Medical Physics (APURF) and has been awarded six five-year teaching evaluation periods. In university management, she has served as Head of the Department of Physiology and as a member of the University Research Committee. She is currently an elected member of the University Senate, the Faculty Board, and the Quality Committee of the Faculty of Physics. Her research activity has focused on two main areas: Medical Physics and Acoustics. In Medical Physics, she is the head of the GIFIME research group (GIUV2017-358) at the University of Valencia. The group’s research lines include laser metrology applied to dermatology, dentistry, traumatology and cell cultures; structured light techniques for non-invasive diagnosis and monitoring of scoliosis and spinal curvature analysis; infrared thermography applied to medicine and sports, including fracture diagnosis, diabetic foot assessment, and applications in paediatrics and stomatology; and image analysis, with the development of software for the digitalisation of dental arches, orthopantomographs, CBCT images and digital scanners. In the field of Acoustics, developed in collaboration with the ACUSVIRT group at the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the University of Valencia, her research has addressed the acoustic characterisation of rooms through objective and perceptual parameters, as well as visual and acoustic virtual reality (auralisation) for the preservation of sound heritage and the reconstruction of disappeared spaces (archaeoacoustics). As a result of her research activity, she has been awarded six research evaluation periods (five for research and one for innovation and knowledge transfer), has supervised 26 PhD theses (with eight currently in progress) and 37 Master’s theses. She has participated in 27 publicly funded research projects, acting as principal investigator in 13 of them, and has been responsible for five collaborative research contracts. Her scientific output includes more than 230 communications at national and international conferences and 225 publications, 119 of which are articles in indexed scientific journals. She is the author of a utility model related to the assessment of acoustic quality in auditoria and co-inventor of the international patent “Non-invasive cancer treatment” (PCT/EP2022/053424), focused on non-invasive cancer treatment through the combined application of electromagnetic fields and hyperthermia. She has been a member of organising committees of national and international conferences, has carried out research stays at national and international institutions, and is a member of several scientific societies, including ESTRO, AAPM, RSEF, SEFM and SEA. |
Carlos Romá Mateo (Valencia, 1980) is a Biochemist and holds a Ph. D. in molecular biology and genetics. The theme of his doctoral thesis (2004 - 2009, Prince Felipe Research Center and Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Manchester) was the study of protein families involved in cell signaling in the context of cancer, after which he studied the disease of Lafora, a rare type of epilepsy of fatal consequences (2009 - 2013, Institute of Biomedicine of Valencia - CSIC). From there, his research career has been deepening in the field of rare diseases, from the perspective of oxidative stress and epigenetic alterations. Recently, he has initiated a line of research focused on the molecular alterations resulting from cytotoxicity mediated by circulating histones in the context of sepsis. His teaching career began in 2015 at the European University of Valencia, to finally join the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Universitat de València as professor and researcher since 2017. He has three research periods (six-year periods) recognized by the CNEAI and currently directs the line of research in rare childhood epilepsies in the Laboratory of Pathophysiology of Rare Diseases of the Department of Physiology. He is the coordinator of the Consolidated Group for Teaching Innovation in Narrative Physiology (FISIONARR), where he leads teaching innovation projects based on the use of comics and other audiovisual materials as tools to promote learning in health sciences. In recent years he has been doing many scientific outreach activities, writing in his own blog and in other web pages, performing talks and monologues, as well as participating in all kinds of science dissemination events. He is a writer in Principia, collaborator in Mapping Ignorance, and co-creator and scriptwriter of the bio-science fiction comic The OOBIK proteotype, together with the illustrator Gerardo Sanz, as well as the author of three books about epigenetics, and evolution. Since 2022 he has been the Academic Director of Continuing Education at the University of Valencia, coordinating the university's own degrees and continuing education programs in the Vice-Rectorate for Continuing Education, Teaching Transformation and Employment. |
