Marina Iglesias and Pomar Codex

  • October 2nd, 2018

Within the exhibition "XXI Mostra art públic/ universitat pública" that is being developed on the Burjassot campus during the whole month of October, one of the works that make up this exhibition is located in the hall of building B of the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

This is a work that responds to an interest on the part of the artist Marina Iglesias, for the knowledge of plants and animals through enlightened encyclopedias, through photography and illustrations of numerous types of species.

The work takes as reference the Pomar Codex, "Atlas of natural history" that consists of 218 engravings of botany and zoology and that in the sixteenth century was given by Philip II to Dr. Pomar (Valencian doctor and professor of "simple or herbs"). In the hall of the museum, from the start of the same, there may be a facsimile (replica) of the original, which is now part of the collection of the Historical Library of the University of Valencia. Based on his images, he plans to transform them into a mural painting on the campus, seeking to invite them to reflect on the importance of the image in the scientific diffusion and how these allowed us to recognize and study the species.
"XXI Mostra art públic/ universitat pública" is an exhibition that is part of the Welcome Festival of the Universitat de València. It is organized by the SEDI and the Vice President for Culture and Sports of the University of Valencia and curated by Alba Braza.
