The Universitat de València (UV) keeps on adding medals to their sports track record. This week, the chess, football and volleyball categories of the Spanish University Championship (CEU) celebrated in Andalusia came to an end. The results for the UV were gold and silver in chess and silver in volleyball. The female football team was eliminated during the quarter finals against Almeria.
In the chess category, Diego Macías (UV) took the gold in rapid chess and the silver in blitz chess, resulting in the Universitat being placed fourth in the general university category. The 2026 chess CEU was celebrated in Baeza (Jaén) and was organised by the Universidad Internacional de Andalucía (UNIA).
The competition brought together students from different Spanish universities in the mixed individual bracket, in accordance with the official FIDE rapid chess regulations. The event consisted of the certification process, a technical reunion, a few rounds of rapid chess matches split in two sessions, one last round for the blitz chess category and the award ceremony. Moreover, the championship took place in a historical university environment of great cultural value.
As per the volleyball category, the championship, which was organised by the Universidad de Granada, brought together male and female teams from different Spanish universities and consisted of an initial team phase, after which came the quarter finals, the semi-finals and the final.
The Universitat de València returned home with the silver medal from the male team after losing (1-3) against the Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia (UCAM). On the other hand, the female team was eliminated from the competition during their quarter finals match against Granada (3-0).
Lastly, the UV female football was also eliminated at the quarter finals against Almeria in after losing against Almeria (9-10) in a match that ended in penalty shootouts.
