The Faculty of Psychology and Speech-Language Therapy at the University of Valencia welcomes the election of Professor José María Peiró as President of the Spanish Academy of Psychology, as approved at the institution’s General Assembly held on 26 February 2026.
An Emeritus Professor at the University of Valencia and a Full Member of the Academy, Professor Peiró thereby assumes one of the highest scientific and institutional representative roles in Spanish psychology.
This appointment is of particular significance for our Faculty, since José María Peiró succeeds Professor Heliodoro Carpintero as President, a key figure in the history of Spanish psychology who was also closely linked to the University of Valencia. Professor Carpintero was likewise the first Dean of our Faculty, and this transition in the presidency of the Academy therefore brings together, in a meaningful way, two academic trajectories closely connected to our centre.
Professor José María Peiró’s career constitutes a leading reference in work, organizational and human resources psychology. His scientific and international standing is reflected in a body of work comprising more than 300 articles and around thirty books and monographs, together with editorial responsibilities and scientific advisory roles in highly prestigious publications and research centres. Among other distinctions, he has received internationally renowned awards such as the Aristotle Prize of the EFPA and the Lifetime Award of the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology, in addition to several honorary doctorates.
This is further reinforced by an extensive record of academic and institutional leadership at the international level. He has served as President of the International Association of Applied Psychology, the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology and ENOP, and has also directed a doctoral programme awarded a distinction for excellence and internationally coordinated an Erasmus Mundus Master’s programme in this field.
In short, the election of José María Peiró as President of the Spanish Academy of Psychology represents extraordinary recognition of his career and prestige. It is also excellent news for the Faculty of Psychology and Speech-Language Therapy and for the University of Valencia, whose history is once again linked to two key figures in Spanish psychology: Heliodoro Carpintero and José María Peiró.
