Ariadna Fernández Planells, professor of Audiovisual Communication at the Universitat Politècnica de València, reflects on how the technological factor affects work with young people.
The new generations use the information and communication technologies to interact with each other, learn, empower themselves, participate, have fun... But are they really digital natives? And how can we take advantage of their technological knowledge when working with them?
Technology and the way we use it can become a meeting point between adults and young people. In order to do this, we need to put aside the alarmist thoughts as well as the optimistic ones. At the same time, we need to assess the potential risks and opportunities of integrating ICT into young people’s daily life.
Young people need not only to be protected, but also to be equipped with the necessary skills to interact with the media in a mature, independent and critical way.
