The Upper Paleolithic revolution... Or the Middle Paleolithic one?

Burying the dead is a human behaviour that does not have any known precedent or parallelism in our closest primate relatives. It appears for the first time in the archaeological register around 100.000 years ago and it has a very interesting context: the burials are performed in the same living places and their apparition coincides with other forms of symbolism such as body painting and ornaments.

Joâo Zilhao is a Full University Professor of the Universitat de Barcelona since 2011. Previously he was professor of Paleolithic Architecture in the University of Bristol 2005-2010 and the University of Lisboa.
