On 11 and 12 November 2025, the Faculty of Geography and History of the Universitat de València will held the fourth edition of the permanent seminar ‘Women, Art and Antiquity. Breaking clichés’. organised by Arsmaya Research Group The gathering will be divided into two complementary sessions aimed at reflecting the role of women in old societies, from a genre and materiality perspective.
The first session ‘Art and Gender in Pre-Columbian America’ (11 November at 15:00, Palmireno Hall) will include a Mayan Hieroglyphic Writing workshop by professor Elena San José Ortigosa. Furthermore, professor Patricia Horcajada Campos will give a conference entitled ‘Women and care in Mesoamerica’. Both professors teach at Complutense University of Madrid. The session will conclude with a panel discussion coordinated by Arsmaya Group.
The second session, ‘Art and gender in the ancient Mediterranean: women and textile production’ (12 november, at 11:00, Palmireno Hall) will address the role of women in old textile work, with the conferences ‘From prisoners of war to supervisors: textile workers in Mesopotamia’ by professor Agnès Garcia-Ventura (Autonomous University of Barcelona) and ‘Tapestries, cloaks and molluscs: textile work in ancient Greece’ by professor Alejandro Garés Molero (Autonomous University of Madrid). Then, there will be a panel discussion coordinated by Arsmaya Group.
