Jordi Sanjuan's finalist research is part of the already concluded European project MESOC, led by Econcult
The prize (ENCATC Research Award),"Supporting the next generation of talented researchers to impact cultural management and policy", recognizes the best doctoral thesis in the field of cultural management and policy, with special emphasis on the innovative and pioneering character, the applied implications and the potential to inform the development of public policies and benefit professionals in the field of culture. More than 30 candidates, from 25 countries around the world, have applied. The winner of this year's edition was João Oswaldo Leiva Filho, Brazilian doctorate in Goldsmiths, University of London, with a thesis entitled "Fifty years measuring cultural engagement: contributions, gaps and the future of survey".
Jordi Sanjuan's finalist research is part of the already concluded European project MESOC, led by Econcult, and has been directed by professors Pau Rausell and Rafael Boix. It has also had funding from the Ministry of Universities with a University Teacher Training (FPU) contract. The thesis provides the first quantified and generalized evidence for a set of regions across Europe of the impacts of culture on well-being in all its dimensions, including access to services, civic engagement, community, education, housing, income, environment, health, safety, work and life satisfaction. It thus demonstrates that the cultural and creative industries are capable of improving the quality of life and regional well-being both objectively and subjectively, although in different ways in some regions and others.
ENCATC is the European network for cultural policy and management. "ENCATC represents, promotes and advances the fields of education, research and practice in cultural management and policy, encouraging an inclusive, sustainable and democratic development of the arts and culture for the benefit of society".
Sanjuan has stated that "being a finalist is already a very important recognition that highlights the research of recent years and its contribution to the field of the economy of culture. The level of João Oswaldo Leiva Filho is also very high, and he really deserved the award, so I am very happy for him and wish him much success in his research career.”
