The story unfolds in the Catalonian mountains, around the year 1900. Sebastiano, the landlord, gets his lover, Marta, to marry a shepherd, Pedro. He wants to keep her as a lover while, at the same time, marries to a rich woman that can deal with his debts. At first, Marta hates Pedro however, slowly but steadily she recognises his qualities and ends up loving him. When Sebastiano tries to force Marta into loving him again, Pedro kills him.
