Fernando Savater

The philosopher, writer and Spanish journalist, translated to more than twenty languages, has marked the Spanish intellectual panorama with books such as Ética para Amador. However, few know about his deep francophilia: all along his lifetime, Savater has been a passionate defender of French culture and he has translated emblematic authors such as Voltaire, Diderot y Bataille. «I have more books in French than in Spanish in my library», he recently confessed during an interview. His francophilia goes back to his childhood in País Vasco, under the guardianship of a French governess, and he fed from his first reading of Tintín, in Biarritz. His connection with France was strengthened with his later immersion into Sartre and Beauvoir texts and other philosophers from the Age of Enlightenment. What's more, Savater made friends with the philosopher Clément Rosset, from whom he introduced his work in Spain.

Synopsis

This encounter, organised by La Base Culture - Maison des francophonies with the sponsorship of the international lawyers office Delaguía y Luzón, will give the opportunity of discovering the deep connection that links Savater with French culture, essential influence in his work and philosophy. The act, open to anyone, will offer to the Valencian public the opportunity of listening first-hand the memories, reflections and anecdotes of Savater about his love for France in a Spanish conversation moderated by Paul Pierroux-Taranto, journalist and president of La Base Culture. What’s more, after the celebration of the encounter, the audience will be able to enjoy of a cocktail with the very best Valencian wines.
