CENTRAL THEME

TRADITIONAL SPORTS IN VALENCIA AND ALL AROUND THE WORLD

Like in previous editions, the Nau Menuda follows a theme that links all the educational content. In July we will get to know the ‘Traditional sports in Valencia and all around the world'.

Traditionally, sport has always been seen as a way of teaching values such as striving to improve, cooperation, integration, teamwork, etc. At the same time, traditional games and sports are fundamental elements of our cultural heritage. These have been preserved over time because they have been passed down from generation to generation.

We are lucky to have a sport of our own, Valencian pilota, so it will have a special role in this summer’s programme. Additionally, participants will get to know other traditional Valencian sports such as  ‘colimbicultura’ (pigeon-keeping) and lateen. They will also get the chance to practice a more recent sport, colpbol.

On the other hand, the same way as music and gastronomy, traditional sports are also cultural manifestations of a nation. Therefore, they help us understand other societies. For this reason, we will embark in a marvellous journey to discover other traditional sports such as tamburello or lacrosse.

Finally, the participants will learn about sports that are considered as cultural heritage of humanity, like the Olympic Games, which have transformed into a symbol of integration, coexistence and respect between nations.

In conclusion, this edition is a journey across different cultures.

Participants will discover, through their traditional sports, how other cultures have influenced ours and the richness that diversity brings us.

Come and join us!

ACTIVITIES

CULTURAL ACTIVITIESTheatre.

SPORTS: Valencian pilota, birles, colpbol, tamburello, lacrosse.

READING WORKSHOP: This workshop, designed to encourage reading, consists of activities based on the reading of a book.

PLAY CENTREThis an entertainment place where children can play freely. It is ideal for exercise and rule games, which favour social relationships.

WORKSHOPS:

First week: 'Va de Bo'

If we talk about traditional Valencian sports, we must start by naming VALENCIAN PILOTA.

GLOVE.

In order to play Valencian Pilota, proper protection is needed. For this reason, participants will make their own Valencian pilota gloves.

LEARNING ABOUT PIGEON-KEEPING
Participants will learn about this sport in which the male pigeon tries to woo the female by means of innate or trained qualities.

Second week: 'In my town, they play…'

We will investigate which sports were– and still are– practiced across the Valencian Community.

VALENCIAN LATEEN
Lateen is not a sport exclusive to Valencia; it is practiced in Indonesia, Italy, France... but it has a peculiarity: it has barely evolved due to the fact that it is practised in an enclosed landscape such as the Albufera.

SPORT MAPS
We will create a giant map of the Valencian Community with its districts. Next, we will list its traditions, culture, gastronomy... The aim is to learn about our culture in every corner of the Valencian Community.

Third week: ‘Travelling though sport’

We will embark in a wonderful journey to discover which are the most distinctive sports in different cultures around the world.

THE MELON GAME
This game originated in Namibia. The players are split into two teams, the balls are distributed around the playing field and the rest of the team must keep still. The balls must be thrown at the players of the opposing team, who cannot step outside of the circle.

WARI
Even though this games have been recently introduced in some countries of the West, their origins date back to Ancient Egypt. Wari is a game played with a board and figures.

Fourth week: ‘From Olympia to the Olympiads’

While talking about traditional sports, we must not forget about the Olympiads.

HISTORY OF THE OLYMPIADS
A presentation of the history of the Olympiads: their origin, which games were part of it and why they took place every four years. It will end with a workshop where we will elaborate symbols admired by the athletes, such as olympic medals.

WHAT IF IT WAS A SPORT?
In this activity the participants must make up a sport. Every team will have a group of cards indicating different materials. All this information must be used in order to name and create a sport.

FIELD TRIPS

TRIP TO MANISES

We will travel to the ‘Els Filtres’ park in Manises (Valencia), characterised by their ceramic murals representing the history of Valencia. Next, we will visit the local ‘trinquete’ to learn about the court where Valencian pilota is played.

Items to bring: water bottle, cap, comfortable footwear, pencil and/or pencil case and lunch.

MUSEUM OF SCIENCES OF VALENCIA

It is a referent in interactive science. We will spend the morning participating in different activities and viewing different sections such as the pendulum, the human body, nature, the sea and technology.

Items to bring: water bottle, cap, comfortable footwear and lunch.

VEDAT SWIMMING POOL (TORRENT, VALENCIA)

It is a swimming pool with different themes, children’s area and slides. The kids will enjoy a day in contact with nature and water.

Items to bring: water bottle, cap, flip-flops/water shoes, sunscreen, swimwear, towel, underwear to change afterwards, plastic bag for wet clothes, lunch.

POBLA DE FARNALS BEACH

We will spend the morning at the Pobla Marina beach in Pobla de Farnals. The water in this beach is really calm as it is located between two stone breakwaters. The participants will be able to play freely and enjoy the beach.

Items to bring: water bottle, cap, flip-flops/water shoes, sunscreen, swimwear, towel, underwear to change afterwards, plastic bag for wet clothes, lunch.

GET TO KNOW THE UV: UNIVERSITY SPORTS PAVILLION OF THE BLASCO IBÁÑEZ CAMPUS
