About the Chair

The Horta of Valencia is one of the most significant and emblematic historical territories for the Valencian society. It is also a space which has been socially constructed for centuries by the people who have inhabited and made use of it, both from the Horta itself and from the City of Valencia. And, without a doubt, it is also a paradigm of a successful country-city relationship which, periodically, has been a cause of conflict and divergence of interests.

Nowadays, the Horta de Valencia can be defined as a major cultural and landscape   heritage. It is accompanied by a human, social and economic reality of people' daily life that makes the Horta exist day by day. This heritage is also intertwined with the demands of the post-industrial urban society that has been continuously occupying the agricultural space.

It is in this sense that the Chair “L'Horta de València: Heritage, Life and Sustainable Futureaims not only to disseminate the past and present of this territory with its own name, but also to be an opportunity  to talk about the future with all the parts involved. There are some other objectives such as to document and make known the historical, architectural and cultural heritage that the Horta has accumulated over centuries; to make the greatest possible dissemination of the abundant studies, research and projects that the academic and professional world has produced and contributed to over the last few years in this area; to disseminate the most specific knowledge about what this territory has been and is today among the areas and entities of Valencian society. In conclusion, this chair seeks to be the forum for debate on the present and future within the complex agricultural and metropolitan space that l’Horta of Valencia represents and in which it is located.
