Chronology

18th-19th centuries.

History

According to J. A. García Esparza (2012), the Carbonell barraca (hut) dates from the mid-18th century, while the PGOU of Alboraia (2019) dates the barraca to the 20th century. As in the case of many of these popular buildings in l’Horta (the irrigated land of València), it is not easy to give a more specific chronology. As in the whole of the periphery of the city of València, many of these barraques (huts) were built during the 19th or early 20th century, even with possible important modifications on the same plot. These barraques do not usually appear in the documents of the past centuries in an identifiable form by names or place names, while at an oral level they were usually known in their surroundings by the name or nickname of the people who owned or lived there. For this reason, the name of the barraca was frequently modified due to the change of residence of these people, and it is difficult to determine the specific history of the owners, works, etc., without family witnesses or neighbours. Nowadays, it is completely abandoned.

Description

According to M. Del Rey and A. Gallud (PAT of l’Horta, 2018), this barraca (hut) is still located in a well-preserved irrigated land and forms part of a built ensemble consisting of two other annexed porch-type units that have extended the original hut but have no constructive value. The hut itself is of the “hallway” type, with a lateral hallway on the left-hand side, and the façade has a very modern tiling at ground-floor level which is alien to the building tradition of the barraques (huts). The corrugated fibre concrete roof is also an inappropriate element. According to J. A. García Esparza (2012), it is built of adobe with brick reinforcements, the whole is whitewashed, and the roof maintains the wooden beams and reeds but with the aforementioned fibre concrete slabs. It has a rectangular floor plan with a surface area of 56.70 m2 (610.3 ft2), a front width of 6.30 m (20ft 8in) and a depth of 9 m (29ft 6.3in) in length. The height is 7.20 metres (23ft 7.4in).
