History

The tongues of land are mentioned in the lease of the management and distribution of the water of the Benàger and Faitanar canal to a séquier (the person who is responsible for distributing the water of the public irrigation canal), carried out by the commune in 1425, but we place its origin in the Islamic period before the 13th century.

Description

The Martina tongue of land divisor consists of a stone spur in the centre of the Benàger irrigation channel, and its function is to divide the water into two proportional parts: a major part that continues straight south through the “séquia mare” (the main irrigation canal) which from this point onwards will be called the Martina canal, and a secondary part that corresponds to the Martina’s “braç” (arm) which ends in the Faitanar irrigation canal. However, nowadays it is still built with stone blocks and a cutwater made up of a large curved central stone, as well as lateral guides for manually placing gates. It is of small dimensions, given the already advanced stage of the hydraulic system in which it is found.
