The Chair of Horta de València: Territori Metropolità organised a conference on 15 November 2022, part of its Autumn Lecture Series and within the framework of its activities of transfer and dissemination among Valencian society of the studies and research of its teaching and research staff on topics related to l'Horta de València. The event took place at 6:45pm. in the main hall of the Centro de Actividades para Personas Mayores del barrio de Campanar with a very good public attendance.
Dr. Ferran Esquilache Martí held the conference in which the main theme was the historical origins of l'Horta de València, a subject to which he has devoted several articles and a monographic book published by the Publications Service of the University of Valencia under the title: ‘Els fundadors de l'Horta de València’ (The Founders of l'Horta de València)..
As the researcher explained, in the second half of the 20th century there was a debate as to whether these origins were Roman or medieval Muslim, but in the last twenty years the great advance of medieval archaeology has made it possible to explain clearly that it was from the 9th and 10th centuries, more than a thousand years ago, when the arrival of a population of Muslim Berber origin from the Maghreb led to the construction of the first irrigation systems which, greatly expanded, have survived to the present day.
Dr. Esquilache also showed the audience the working methodology of the so-called extensive archaeology, a fundamental tool to understand how historical landscapes have been built and also Horta de València. The event ended with several questions from the audience related to this topic
Event participants: Universitat de València, València City Council, Las Naves and Chair of Horta de València: Territori Metropolità; In collaboration with Associació de veïns i veïnes de Campanar.
