Born in Valencia (1978), he is an Associate Professor (Profesor Titular) of Ethics and Political Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences of the Universitat de València. He holds a BA in Ecclesiastical Studies (San Vicente Ferrer Faculty of Theology), a BA in Classical Philology, and both a BA and a PhD in Philosophy (Universitat de València) with an Extraordinary Doctorate Award. Furthermore, he obtained a second PhD in Philosophy from the University of Bologna.

His research interests encompass moral, political and social philosophy, civic studies, and contemporary hermeneutics. Furthermore, his work covers the philosophy of the art of living and the relationship between philosophy and literature, with a particular emphasis on the thought of Aristotle and Nietzsche and their reception. A member of the ETIDEMO (Applied Ethics and Democracy) research group, he has participated in more than ten competitive national and international projects, notably the 2021 Knowledge Generation project on armed conflicts and multidimensional security, as well as two projects within the Prometeo programme.

He has three recognised six-year research periods (sexenios) and is the author of books, book chapters, and articles in high-impact journals. He has undertaken research stays at internationally renowned centres in cities such as Bologna, Paris, Turin, Freiburg, Oxford, Washington, Boston, and Mexico City, among others, having been a fellow of the Real Colegio de España and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

In the field of management, he served as Head of the Department of Philosophy (2019–2025) and is currently Vice-Dean for Culture, Transfer, and Sustainability. He coordinates the Philosophy Pathway and the Higher Studies Course in Thought and Culture of Classical Antiquity (ANCLA) of the La Nau Gran University Programme.

As a lecturer, he has five recognised five-year teaching periods (quinquenios), achieving an excellent rating in the most recent evaluation period. He has supervised eight doctoral theses (six with international mention) and has led established educational innovation projects such as Ethos Living Lab – Ethics and Professions.

Additionally, he has served as an evaluator for European programmes, including Horizon Europe, Erasmus+, COST and Horizon 2020. Furthermore, he has led international cooperation projects and is a member of the Executive Board of the Valencian Community Section of the Spanish Society of Classical Studies (SEEC).

Javier Gracia Calandín has been an Associate Professor (Profesor Titular de Universidad) at the University of Valencia since November 2020. Since September 2026, he has held national accreditation for appointment as Full Professor (Catedrático de Universidad) from ANECA, the Spanish National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation.

He obtained his PhD in September 2009 with the support of a competitive FPU doctoral fellowship awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Education, receiving the European Doctorate distinction and the Extraordinary Doctorate Award.

He has been awarded three officially recognised six-year research periods (sexenios) by CNEAI (ANECA), reaching the maximum number of periods eligible for assessment to date (the most recent covering 2019–2024), which demonstrates a sustained research record of recognised quality. His scholarly output comprises more than one hundred contributions, including 48 articles in academic journals (18 in top-tier SJR Q1–Q2 journals and 17 in SJR Q3–Q4 journals), 15 books (as author, co-author or editor), and 40 book chapters. The majority of his books and book chapters have been published by prestigious academic publishers highly ranked in the Scholarly Publishers Indicators (SPI).

He has undertaken eight research stays lasting more than one month at internationally renowned universities, including Cambridge, Oxford, Northwestern University, Freie Universität Berlin, the University of Tübingen, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and NOVA University Lisbon. Most of these stays were funded through competitive research schemes, and their outcomes have directly contributed to his scholarly publications and the internationalisation of his academic profile.

His knowledge transfer activities have had a sustained and direct social impact. Over more than twenty years, he has delivered 465 hours of specialised face-to-face teaching in applied ethics at the Valencian Institute of Public Security and Emergencies (IVASPE), providing professional training to more than one thousand members of law enforcement agencies in the Valencian Community. He also has extensive experience in secondary education, including the coordination of European educational projects and the assumption of academic management responsibilities.

In university teaching, he has taught official courses at the University of Valencia for 18 years, delivering more than 300 ECTS credits of teaching, and has been awarded three officially recognised five-year teaching periods (quinquenios), the most recent covering 2018–2022. His teaching experience encompasses undergraduate and master's degree programmes, bilingual teaching environments, different university campuses, and a particular commitment to compulsory first-year courses and large student cohorts. These responsibilities have required considerable expertise in academic planning, coordination and student support. In the only DOCENTIA teaching assessment conducted to date, he achieved a score of 183 out of 200.

Since 2017, he has served annually as a Visiting Lecturer on the PhD Programme in Educational Sciences at the Technological University of Pereira (UTP), Colombia, achieving an outstanding student evaluation score of 9.9 out of 10.

He has delivered more than 200 hours of teaching in continuing professional development and university extension programmes. He has supervised and assessed numerous undergraduate and master's dissertations, including 21 master's dissertations in the Master's Degree in Ethics and Democracy and 22 in the Master's Degree in Secondary Education Teacher Training. He has also supervised 24 students during their teaching placements in the latter programme.

He has acted as sole supervisor of seven doctoral theses, five of them at the University of Valencia, all of which were awarded the highest distinction (Sobresaliente cum laude) and the International Doctorate distinction, with one also receiving an Extraordinary Doctorate Award. The remaining two doctoral theses were completed at a foreign university whose doctoral programme holds a High Quality Accreditation awarded by the Ministry of Education; both received the highest academic distinctions of Excellent and Laureate, respectively.

In terms of academic leadership, he has continuously led teaching teams through 12 competitively funded educational innovation projects, serving as principal investigator and coordinator. He coordinated the Philosophy specialisation of the Master's Degree in Secondary Education Teacher Training for four years and, since 2017, has been the founding coordinator of the National Network for Educational Innovation in Philosophy (RIEF). He has also served as conference director and scientific lead for four international conferences on educational innovation held at different Spanish universities (University of Valencia, 2017; Complutense University of Madrid, 2021; University of Málaga, 2023; and University of Valencia, 2025).

His main research interests encompass the study of classical philosophical thinkers; moral, political and social philosophy; applied ethics; philosophy of education and ethical education for human development; neuroethics and moral neuroeducation; critical and intercultural hermeneutics; and cosmopolitan and intercultural ethics.
