Research Group on Emotion and language 'at work': The discursive emotive/evaluative function in different texts and contexts: Project Persuasion - EMO-FUNDET

Description

This project analyses the linguistic mechanisms of persuasion in both English and Spanish and in verbal and non-verbal language. To this end, a review of the different linguistic (pragmatico-discursive) theories on persuasion, argumentation and rhetoric is carried out and different samples of business/institutional discourse are analysed to discover mechanisms of persuasion in each of the two languages.

The results can demonstrate differences in the different mechanisms used in English and Spanish, which are therefore specific to each language, but also mechanisms that are comparable. These results will be basic to design ad hoc materials for the training plan of two different levels (ESO and University).

Goals CT
  • Study and analysis of the linguistic mechanisms of persuasion in English and Spanish, in verbal and non-verbal language.
  • Study of persuasive strategies in the work environment (business and institutional).
  • Experimental empirical study in educational contexts. Elaboration and implementation of a training plan.
  • Designing the module on persuasion for the online and/or blended learning course, for the training of professionals in companies or institutions.
Research lines
  • Persuasion at work

Study of persuasive strategies in the work environment (business and institutional) that are used for the construction of a corporate identity in public media (particularly in digital contexts).

  • Persuasion in political discourse

Studies of persuasive strategies typical of oral political discourse in the Anglo-Saxon and Spanish context, such as metaphor, metonymy, evaluation (Martin & White, 2005) or Transitivity mechanisms (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004, 2014), or a combination of them, with the aim of convincing the audience and obtaining their votes, and which are therefore used with an ideologising purpose.
