AI-LANG
CIGE/2026/38
“AI-LANG: Artificial Intelligence for the Enhancement of Communicative Competence in University Language Education” is a research project that aims to analyse the impact of the autonomous use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools on the development of oral and written communicative competence among university students of English and French. The project focuses particularly on aspects such as linguistic accuracy, discourse organisation, and communicative appropriacy, as well as on how the autonomous use of AI tools influences students’ learning behaviours and strategies.
The project involves a longitudinal study based on a mixed-methods approach, bringing together the Universitat de València and the Universitat Politècnica de València, in collaboration with other European universities. Data will be collected before, during, and after the implementation of AI-supported learning tasks in order to analyse students’ development over time and provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of these tools on language learning.
To this end, AI-LANG combines a range of quantitative and qualitative instruments, including diagnostic tests, oral and written production assessments, questionnaires, focus groups, reflective journals, and recordings of oral tasks. These instruments will make it possible to examine students’ perceptions, learning strategies, and progress, as well as to analyse how they autonomously interact with AI tools and the extent to which these tools contribute to the development of linguistic accuracy and communicative competence in English and French.
The project responds to the growing incorporation of artificial intelligence into university language-learning environments and to the need for empirical evidence on its pedagogical effects over the medium and long term. Although recent studies point to potential benefits related to personalised learning and adaptive feedback, evidence remains limited regarding the influence of these tools on the development of communicative competence and learner autonomy. In this context, AI-LANG seeks to contribute to an ethical, pedagogically grounded, and evidence-based integration of AI.
Based on the findings, the project will develop pedagogical resources, model tasks, and guidelines for the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into university language education. In this way, AI-LANG aims to contribute to educational innovation in higher education by promoting pedagogical models that combine technology, learner autonomy, and the development of communicative competence, in line with European priorities in digital education and multilingualism.
