Information concerning the student permit/visa. How can I apply for it?

Tipologies:

Mobility or exchange students and of cooperation programs at the University of Valencia

Once you arrive in Spain,

Initial stage:

  • For stays longer than 180 days, a 90-day visa is required, and within the first month in Spain, you must REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT at the police station where you will process your TIE (Foreigner Identification Card).

    Appointments are available Monday to Friday from 2:00 p.m. onwards. They can only be booked using an electronic certificate (Cl@ve, FNMT digital certificate, or electronic DNI).

    The University of Valencia provides assistance in obtaining the digital certificate for its university community.

  • On the other hand, if the stay is less than 180 days, the visa will cover the entire period, and no additional procedures are necessary.

Renewal of study stays

  1. Application form EX00, duly completed and signed by the applicant.
  2. Proof of payment of the fee form 790, code 052 – provide the copy for the Administration. Select the option: "1.3 Extension of the authorization for study stays."
  3. A copy of the TIE to be renewed.
  4. A copy of the passport and visa:
    • Copy of the data page showing nationality, place of birth, and expiration date.
    • Copy of the visa page with the entry stamp to Spain (only for the first renewal).
  5. Proof of residency registration, if the home address has changed.
  6. Certificate of university enrollment.
  7. Certificate of academic achievement from the previous year (either grades or a certificate signed by the director of the postgraduate program).
  8. Proof of financial means:
    • A scholarship certificate indicating the covered period, amount, and any related expenses.
    • A bank certificate showing account ownership and transfers received during the previous academic year, including sender details and the average balance.
    • A notarized statement of financial responsibility, accommodation, and maintenance, updated and quantified. If this notarized document originates from abroad, it must be translated by a sworn translator and apostilled if necessary.
    • Formal job offer proposal or income from an employment contract (provided that the option to work is permitted under their study permit).
  9. Proof of public or private health insurance covering all risks normally insured for Spanish citizens, with no limitations, co-payments, or waiting periods. Travel insurance is not valid for this purpose.

If you are an Erasmus or International Program student with a semester-long stay and an initial 180-day visa but wish to extend it to complete a full academic year, in addition to the above documentation, you must also provide:

EU Mobility students coming from universities in European Union countries

Citizens of European Union Member States and other countries within the European Economic Area (Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein) who are staying in Spain for more than three months as Erasmus students must register in person at the Central Registry of Foreigners. This application must be submitted to the Bailén police station (C/ Bailén, 9 - Valencia) within three months of entering Spain. A certificate of registration will be issued immediately, including the name, nationality, address, foreigner identification number, and registration date of the applicant. Access the form 790 Fee, Code 012. After filling in personal data, select the box: "Certificate of registration of a community resident or Residence Card for a family member of an EU citizen" under the section "Identity Cards (TIE) and certificates of registration for community residents."

Non-EU Mobility students coming from Universities in European Union countries

If you have a Residence permit or visa in an EU country, you will not need to apply for a new visa.

Before arriving in Spain, you must send the following documents by email to visados@uv.es:

  • A copy of your passport (it must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Spain).
  • A copy of your residence permit/visa (it must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Spain).
  • Proof that you are completing part of your studies within the framework of an EU program (a nomination letter issued by your home university).
  • An acceptance letter from the Universitat de València (you can obtain it through the electronic administration platform of the Universitat de València: entreu).
  • Fill in only the "DATOS DEL ESTUDIANTE" section of the following form.

If you did not send the documents before arriving in Spain, you may do so within a maximum of one month from your entry date into the country.

The International Relations and Cooperation Service will send the documents to the Immigration Office, and we will inform you once they are registered.

However, if you are not coming through an EU mobility programme or you do not have the necessary documentation for us to make the communication, you must contact the nearest Spanish consulate in your country of residence or where you are currently living for further informationYou can find more information on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain, searching for the Spanish embassy.

Foreign students enrolled in official studies at the University of Valencia

Once you arrive in Spain,

Initial stage:

  • If your stay exceeds 180 days, you must hold a 90-day visa. Within the first month of your arrival in Spain, you must REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT at the police station to process your TIE (Foreigner Identification Card).
  • If, on the other hand, your stay is less than 180 days, the visa will cover the entire period, and no additional procedure will be required.

Information regarding the extension of study permits. Documentation:

If you are not an exchange student participating in a program managed by the International Relations and Cooperation Service, or a recipient of a Cooperation grant, you must complete the process independently and submit the required documents through the MERCURIO platform. Please note that a digital certificate is required

  1. Application form EX-00, duly completed and signed by the applicant.
  2. Proof of payment of the form 790, code 052. Submit the copy for the Administration. Select the option "1.3 Extension of the authorization for study permits."
  3. Copy of the TIE you wish to renew.
  4. Copy of your valid passport, including the entry visa and entry stamp. Ensure that all pages with personal data and expiration dates are included.
  5. Proof of residency registration, if you have changed your home address.
  6. University enrollment certificate.
  7. Certificate of achievement from the previous academic year (this may include a certificate of grades or a document signed by the director of the postgraduate program).
  8. Proof of financial means:
    • A scholarship certificate indicating the covered period, amount, and any related expenses.
    • A bank certificate showing account ownership and transfers received during the previous academic year, including sender details and the average balance.
    • A notarized statement of financial responsibility, accommodation, and maintenance, updated and quantified. If this notarized document originates from abroad, it must be translated by a sworn translator and apostilled if necessary.
    • Formal job offer proposal or income from an employment contract (provided that the option to work is permitted under their study permit).
  9. Certificate of public or private medical insurance covering all risks normally insured for Spanish citizens, with no limits, co-payments, or waiting periods. Travel insurance is not valid for this purpose.

Students coming to Spain with an initial 180-day visa who wish to request an extension to complete the academic year, in addition to the previous documentation, must also provide:

  • A medical certificate explicitly stating that the student does not suffer from any diseases that could have serious repercussions on public health. This certificate must not be older than three months.
  • A police clearance certificate from the country of legal residence for the past five years. This document must be legalized or apostilled where necessary and, if required, translated by a sworn translator. It must not be older than three months.
Non-UE students coming to the University of Valencia without student visa

For stays over 3 months, foreign students must apply for a student visa to the corresponding Spanish consolate before coming. Students without visa, who are allowed to entry in Spain with his/her passport, must apply for an initial student authorization from Spain (see requeriments below) . (List of third countries whose nationals are exempt from the obligation to hold a visa to cross the Spanish borders)

  • The application must be submitted at least two months before the start of classes. There are exceptions to this requirement (see information note, pages 1 and 2). In any case, the assessment and validation of these exceptions depends exclusively on the Office of the Subdelegation of the Government in Valencia, and the University of Valencia (UV) only acts as a mediator and advisor in these procedures.
  • Additionally, the application must be submitted when there are still two months of regular stay remaining in Spain, that is, during the first month after entering the country.

To be considered: The granting of the authorization is not guaranteed and depends exclusively on the Office of the Subdelegation of the Government in Valencia. The UV does not intervene in the resolution of the application.

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

  • Application form EX-00 duly completed and signed by the interested party.
  • Copy of valid passport, complete (all sheets), valid for all the duration of the stay.
  • Economic Means: evidence of the financial sufficiency during the student stay and to return to his/her country. This could be proved by the following documents:
    • A scholarship certificate indicating the covered period, amount, and any related expenses.
    • A bank certificate showing account ownership and transfers received during the previous academic year, including sender details and the average balance.
    • A notarized statement of financial responsibility, accommodation, and maintenance, updated and quantified. If this notarized document originates from abroad, it must be translated by a sworn translator and apostilled if necessary.
    • Formal job offer proposal or income from an employment contract (provided that the option to work is permitted under their study permit).
  • Global Health Insurance Card or Certificate of Public or Private Medical Insurance covering those risks normally insured to Spanish citizens, with no limits, co-payments or waiting periods. Travel insurance is not valid for this purpose. If the police is arranged out Spain, it would have to be translated into Spanish.
  • Proof of admission in the University of Valencia (e.g. an Acceptance Letter, Certificate of Enrolment.)
  • If their stay exceeds 6 months:
    • Medical certificate stating that the student does not suffer any disease does not suffer from any disease that could cause serious repercussions to public health. It cannot be older than three months. If issued out Spain, apostille and translation required.
    • Certificate of “Absence of police records” of the country of legal residence in the last five years. It must be legalized or apostilled where appropriate and, if necessary, translated by a sworn translator. It cannot be older than three months.

IMPORTANT: Documents are not in Spanish must be translated into Spanish by a sworn translator, if they are public ones issued abroad, firstly they must be apostilled and, afterwards, all the sheets, even the apostille one, must be translated into Spanish by a sworn translator registered on the Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores list.
