
The cultural centre La Nau of the University hosted from Monday 21st, the congress ‘Polònia i les fronteres de la identitat europea’, an encounter to bring the Polish culture and society closer to the Valencian public. Piotr Sztompka, one of the most important sociologists in the last fifty years, participated in the congress on Wednesday the 23th November. The University of Valencia and the Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Valencia organize this congress on the occasion of the Poland presidency of the Council of Europe over the second half of 2011. Some of the events scheduled are lectures, films, theatre, visual arts and music performances.
The conference ‘De les fronteres sobre el terreny a les fronteres dins la ment: de camí cap a la identitat europea’ (From land borders to mind borders: the path to the European identity) by Piotr Sztompka took place at 18:00 p.m. at the Aula Magna of La Nau cultural centre of the University of Valencia. The entrance was free but subject to the capacity of the venue.
Sztompka is a full professor of sociological theory in the University of Krakow. He is also a member of the Polish academy of sciences, the European Academy (London), and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (Cambridge, Mass). He was president of the International Sociological Association from 2002 to 2006. Moreover, he is one of the most important sociologists of the theory of the social change.
The Polish cultural institute of Madrid, the different cultural spaces of the University and the art gallery Kessler-Battaglia are collaborating in the congress.
A duet concert by the Valencian pianist, Nieves Pascual, and the Polish cellist, Rafal Jezierki, opened the congress. They interpreted some compositions by Polish composers like G. Bacewicz, F. Chopin and K. Szymanowski at the Capella de la Sapiència of La Nau at 19:30 p.m.
On Wednesday 23, the prestigious sociologist Piotr Sztompka participated at La Nau, as well as in a seminar on sociology taking place on Thursday at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Valencia.
