
The European Union, through the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT by its Spanish initials) announced on Tuesday the winning project of the call of the new Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC in English) focused on healthy living and active aging. The winner project has been Innolife, proposal that counts on the participation of the Universitat de València through the University of Valencia Science Park
This participation is led by the Institute of Biomechanics (IBV) as a core partner (member) of this initiative. In turn and in addition to the Universitat de València (UV) through the Science Park Foundation; IBV, the Ministery of Health and the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) through the Valencia City of Innovation Foundation have been established agreements to promote participation in this KIC of groups and research centers of the Valencian Community focused in the field of health.
InnoLife is a consortium of over 144 leading European companies, universities and research centers from 14 European countries in the Knowledge and Innovation Community about health of EIT. The KIC promoted by the EIT will have a total budget of 2,700 million euros until 2020.
This way, Innolife becomes one of the biggest iniciatives over the world in the field of health that counts on public funding. In the first year of operation, in 2016, the consortium Innolifeexpected to create about 80 new business ideas reaching 140 in 2018. It is expected to create about 70 start-ups per year and have a million students as part of driven programs.
Innolife will have nodes in Spain, France, UK, Belgium, Sweden and Germany. InnoLife headquarters in Spain will be located on the Science Park Foundation of Barcelona.
As reported by the director of the IBV, Pedro Vera, "through this initiative we will establish synergies and exchange knowledge with experts in research and innovation, entrepreneurship and health training at European level".
With InnoLife “we intend to make us live more years with higher quality of life: age greater autonomy and aim for sustainability of health systems".
To get products, services and concepts will be developed in the framework of joint projects between companies, research centers, universities, hospitals and other agents.
Pedro Vera also highlights “the relevance of the Valencian Community to be present in the most important European initiative in the field of health for next years. We are being the protagonists in the new European innovation policy and have the vocation to serve as a bridge for companies and Valencian entities can participate in the initiatives funded by the KIC through collaboration between IBV, UV, UPV and the Department of Health. Moreover, InnoLife objectives are aligned with the priorities of the RIS3 CV, Smart Specialisation Strategy Research and Innovation designed in Valencia”.
Knowledge Communities
European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), established in 2008, is the first European initiative that fully integrates the three aspects of the knowledge triangle (higher education, research and innovation) through the Communities of Knowledge and Innovation (KIC). There are currently three active KIC: InnoEnergy (dedicated to sustainable energy), Climate-KIC (dedicated to mitigation and adaptation to climate change) and ICT Labs (dedicated to the information society and communication). During 2014, the EIT has been selected as KIC InnoLife project in the field of healthy living and active aging as well as other commodity KIC has won the RawMatTERS project.
The EIT and the different KIC have reserved a key role within the new European strategy for research and innovation, Horizon 2020, which was launched this year.
These KIC has to involve, at least, three independent organisations from at least three different Member States of the European Union, and between them must have at least one higher education institution and a private company.
European consortia that these entities are constituted by participating institutions in different regions of the Member States, acting as nodes or co-location centers (CLC).
Specifically, the IBV is one of the 8 core partners of the Spanish CLC InnoLife (there are 6 CLC at European level) and counted with the participation of the Ministry of Health, the UV and UPV under the agreement between them last September to regulate their coordination in the KIC on Healthy Living and Active Ageing.
