On Friday, night visits to the Astronomic Observatory will start at Universitat de València in Aras de los Olmos

The Astronomic Observatory of Universitat de València organised six night visits to the Aras de los Olmos Observatory, at Alto Turia, Comarca dels Serrans, between April and September. The first one is expected to be on Friday 17th April, before sunset, at 20h. Registrations at the Astronomic Observatory Secretary Office: 96 354 34 83.

The Astronomic Observatory of Universitat de València organised six night visits to its observing station in Aras de los Olmos. Such observing station is located in the region of Alto Turia, one of the scarce reserves of the dark sky which are left at the Valencian Region. 

The visit to the Observatory in Aras de los Olmos is a unique experience of contemplation and joy of the dark sky, one of the elements of nature which is becoming more difficult to find. In there, you can learn about the magnificence of the Milky Way, the brightness of thousands of visible stars you can see with a naked eye, the path of the constellations and their bonds with history and culture. 

The Observatory will offer one visit a month, from April to September. The sessions will start before sunset. Therefore, the general timetable which will regulate the beginning of the sessions will be as follows: April, at 20h; May, at 20:30h; June, at 21h; August, at 20:30; and September, at 20h.

The offered days for 2015 are 17th April, 15th May, 19th June, 10th July, 14th August and 4th September.

The visit will begin with a brief presentation of the activities of the Astronomic Observatory of Universitat de València and then, there will be a short tour around the telescopic facilities. In the dead of the night, a guided tour around the sky at first sight will be made, where constellations will be described and the way to identify them. The orientation techniques will be exposed at night from the stars and mythological figures along with classic legends associated to the constellation groups will be mentioned, as well as their movement around the sky. After that, the observing session will take place at one of the telescopes, which includes visible planets, star clusters, nebulous planets and galactic, and external galaxies. 

Each session lasts about two hours and a half. Due to limited seating, only a maxim of 30 people per session will be allowed in, and a minimum of 15 people are required in order to do it. During the morning of the day which the session will take place, the possibility of taking this visit will be confirmed according to meteorology. Otherwise, a different day for the visit will be given for another Friday.

The trip to the Observatory of Aras de los Olmos will be carried out in a particular way for the registered visitors.
