Juli Peretó, professor of the University of Valencia, has been elected ‘Fellow’ of the International Society for the Study of the Origin of Life (ISSOL). The announcement was made during the triennial conference of the society, held in early July in Nara (Japan). Every three years, ISSOL, the main society comprising researchers in the field of origin of life, awards the distinction of ‘Fellow’.
The distinction is given to those members who, as stated in the Statutes, have shown “exceptional and sustained contributions to research on the origin of life, educational activities or service activities to Society and to the scientific community”. The distinctions are limited to 1% of all members and, on this occasion, not only the professor Peretó has been awarded, but also the following members: Marie-Christine Maurel (Université Pierre et Marie Curie, París), George E. Fox (University of Houston) and Nicholas Hud (Georgia Institute of Technology).
Peretó is a professor of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and member of the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology of the University of Valencia. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the Chair for Scientific Dissemination and also instructor of the team Valencia/Biocampus of the University of Valencia, which takes part in the international competition of iGEM synthetic biology (International Genetically Engineered Machine).
Throughout his academic career he has worked in the field of origin and early evolution of life and has also developed and extensive activity as disseminator of science in general and of the biological evolution in particular. Within their teaching activities, his effort in introducing the teaching of origin of life at the university level stands out. He is also the director of the Erasmus intensive course “Origin, evolution and future of the Biosphere”, which includes a consortium of eight European universities.
Peretó has been Secretary (2005-2008) and second Vice-President (2011-2014) of ISSOL and in the last elections for the Executive Board of the Society, he has been elected councilor for the next three years, under the presidency of Sandra Pizzarello (Arizona State University).
