Universitat de València presents a simulator to drive Formula One and GT racing cars

Universitat de València’s University Institute of Robotics and Information Technologies (IRTIC), on the occasion of the Formula One European Grand Prix 2012 (València Street Circuit), has presented a circuit driving simulator for training and instruction of professional racing drivers. This simulator is not only cheaper than those already existing but technically better than those used by the big racing teams. It has been named SI Mouvi i333.

The system has been completely designed and produced by IRTIC with off-the-shell components and with the collaboration of the firm Motrix. Centro de Simulación. The tool represents a step forward because it incorporates a system of movement platform, with 6 degrees of freedom and capacity of production of accelerations up to 0.8G, as well as a cylindrical screen of 3,15 meters of diameter. This screen offers 333 degrees of horizontal view by 55 degrees of vetical view, and has a surface similar to that of a screen of 360”. Thus, it offers the racing driver a very similar feeling to that of being in a real circuit. The driving position is a recreation of a Formula One or GT racing car’s driving position (depending on the setting mode), and the car adjustements can be adapted to several car models.

This system enables an advanced driving training for racing cars both to professional racing drivers and amateurs. It offers a level of realism similar to that of a real circuit but it has appreciably lower cost and risks. ‘This is an example of technology transfer’ as Marcos Fernández, director of IRTIC points out. ‘SI Mouvi i333 represents thirty years of experience in developing driving simulation systems. We have incorporated common technologies that we can find in our daily life, and we have achieved a simulator which is better than the one used by the famous racing teams, but at a lower cost.’

The development manager for the company Motrix, Leo Tachdjian, has expressed his satisfaction both with the product developed by IRTIC and with the cooperation opportunities between both entities. ‘Our idea is to create unique simulator of our own. SI Mouvi i333 can be similar to any vehicles movement. We hope there will be more agreements with IRTIC.’
