Universitat de València has reduced its electricity consumption by 9% in April. This saving is due not only to the closing of the Universitat’s buildings during the Easter holiday but to the energy saving measures implemented by all centres and services. In April, 49,397 Euros have been saved with this reduced electrical consumption.

The water consumption has also been reduced by 11%, which has enabled to save 1,988 Euros. The closing during Easter holidays and the trial closing implemented during last August for 15 days allowed to 142,531 Euros. This year, the August closing will last three weeks.

During last month of April, 3,090,904 Kwh of electricity have been consumed while the forecast was to consume 3,373,176 Kwh. On April 2011, the energy consumption was 3,399,885 Kwh. Regarding water consumption, last April, 18,301 cubic metres were consumed, while 20,579 cubic metres were consumed last April, 2011.

All these measures fall under the economic saving measures and environmentally friendly steps developed which the institution has been developing for four years. Besides these moves, the Universitat has reorganized its contracts with the cleaning and maintenance firms in order to keep saving.

The research buildings, animal facilities, general register, Parc Científic, libraries, La Nau cultural centre, botanic garden, and other services will be operating during these closing months. Access to the centres by the staff is possible, but air conditioning and heating stops working.

The saving measures, which have been running for 4 years, have given excellent results thanks to the collaboration of all centres and services. The money saved is re-invested in teaching comfort measures.
