The line traced by the figure and work of Joan Calví (1509-1564) has profoundly marked the shaping and development of western modernity and, through the colonial expansion and globalisation, has made its mark on the joint of the contemporary world. In this volume are collected a number of researches and works on Calví and Calvinism, belonging to both Theology and History, to Philosophy and Social Sciences. In the 20th C., Karl Barth, in direct confrontation with the Nazi totalitarism, reaffirmed the continuing relevance of the Reformation's "Soli Deo Gloria": the attitude of the believer regarding to the world cannot be of separation (unsupportive) nor of absorption (seculariser), but as witness and commitment in favour of a "responsible society", in which it is applied a constant critic in the hypertrophy of any power, being it political, economic or religious.
