The different faces of superstition and manipulation are the key topics for the thirteenth edition of the Martínez Guerricabeitia Biennale, which will take place at the Sala Acadèmia of Cultural Centre La Nau, UV historical building, from 11 March to 1 May. The Biennale will open for the public in a launching act on 11 March at 19:00.

The Martínez Guerricabeitia Biennal is conceived as a kaleidoscope to show the latest tendencies in creation, to sound out the current state of art and to invite the public to reflection. Likewise, it aims at promoting creativity among Spanish young artists and, at the same time, increasing the UV artistic heritage through the selection of around 20 works of contemporary art co-signed by a selection committee which are part of this field.

The committee includes the following critics: Óscar Alonso Molina (Madrid), Iván de la Torre (Seville), Mariano Navarro (Madrid), Chus Tudelilla (Zaragoza), Alicia Ventura (Valencia) y las galerías Alarcón Criado (Seville), Ángeles Baños (Badajoz), Adora Calvo (Salamanca), Set Espai d’Art (Valencia) y Juan Silió (Santander).

The selected artists, who have turned to a wide range of techniques have been: Javier Arbizu, Diego del Pozo, Manuel Antonio Domínguez, Martín Freire, Daniel G. Andújar, Santiago Giralda, Yann Leto, Rafael Macarrón, Estefanía Martín Sáenz, Rebeca Menéndez, Xavier Monsalvatje, Javi Moreno, MP&MP Rosado, José Luis Puche, Fernando Renes, José Luis Serzo, Antonio Sosa, Felipe Talo, Alain Urrutia y Jesús Zurita.

The 13th Biennale was commissioned by José Pedro Martínez, Head of Activities of the Martínez Guerricabeitia Collection, managed by the UV General Foundation. The poster, the image and the catalogue were designed by Ibán Ramón’s study.

Organised by the Universitat de València through the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Equality, with the collaboration of the Cultural Heritage, Resources and Animal Welfare Councillorship of the Valencian government, Heineken Spain S.A and Santander Bank, this biennale is already a milestone in the city’s contemporary art and so is proved by it 26 years of duration.

The 13th Biennale coincides, this year, with the organisation of a tribute exhibition of Jesís Martínez Guerricabeitia entitled ‘Coleccionismo y mezenazgo: Jesús Martínez Guerricabeitia’ (Collecting and Patronage: Jesús Martínez Guerricabeitia). At the Bancaja Foundation, the selection includes 72 works of art donated from the Martínez Guerricabeitia Collection of the Universitat de València and which mean the totality of the works acquired in the 12 Biennales celebrated between 1990 and 2014. This exhibition is commissioned by artist Francisco Sebastián Nicolau.
