Fortuny Workshop
Conferences and colloquium
Inside the framework of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the death of the painter Mariano Fortuny y Marsal (Reus, 1838 – Roma, 1874), La Nau Cultural Centre of the Universitat de València takes the conference workshop that invites people to rediscover the figure of one of the most influent and singular artists of the 19th century. Considered an undeniable referent in the occidental art history, Fortuny left a work marked by the virtuous technique, the synthesis ability between tradition and modernity, and a deep open look into the aesthetic and cultural changes of his time.
Far from a lecture anchored to the past, this workshop proposes a contemporary review of his legacy. The innovative dimension of his artistic language will be tackled, as well as the projection that his style had in other pictorial schools from the 19th century, among them the Valencian one. The sociability spaces in which he got on will also be analysed, key to understand their paper on the cultural networks and the international market of art. Finally, we will highlight his condition of passionate collector, specially in the textile area, a part that reveals his sensibility towards decorative arts and his affinity with the encyclopaedist spirit of his period.
This cycle wants to definitely be an invitation to look with new eyes a creator that, despite his young death, was able to anticipate concerns and languages that continue questioning the present. The richness of his work and the diversity of is interests turn him into a key figure to reflect on the links between art, society and modernity in the transit between two centuries.
