Wisdom within words [against ageism]
María José Planells

Espadrilles leaving footprints in the form of words

This cross-disciplinary proposal makes use of the facilities and the affective community art, and it is focused on the concept of contemporary individuality crisis and elderly people. In the experience-based perception that seniors have of ageism within the scope of society and health.

As humans, we interpret what happens to us and create stories constantly and unconsciously from what our family, educational, and cultural environment transmits us, without considering its meaning and consequences.

The way we express what happens to us has a certain sense, a symbology, or a picture, which is nothing but a representation in our thoughts. Words are orders for our subconscious. They are not just sounds or signs. They are interconnected to thoughts, thoughts to actions, and actions to reality.

Each word is a seed. Not only does language describe reality, but it also creates it.

To transform the mind, transform vocabulary.

Speak with a purpose, even in silence.

Words constitute destinies. Who has a command on language, rules its life.

Because each sentence shapes identity, thoughts, and decisions.

Changing words not only is speaking different, but it is also speaking differently.

For this reason, communication, words are essential when considering patients’ rehabilitation. Putting words at the service of healing is a powerful tool for healthcare staff.

Words are not innocent, we create things with them, and they are essential regarding contributing to care.

Reorganising the representation of an event through words may make memories and emotions of a wound more manageable and enable to reinvent your own life.

This artistic proposal reconstructs stories and experiences told by the elderly participating in the project. A complex, broad, open project characterised by using diverse registers in which works are expressions of frozen and ephemeral time.

This research and creation project was carried out along with the GRIECE (Nursing Education and Care Research Group) group within the frame of the 2nd call of the Inhabiting Research programme by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Society at the Universitat de València.
