Book's presentation: "Melancholy and loneliness" by Wolf Lepenies
On the next Wednesday 26th September, 2018 at 6 p.m., will take place on the Assembly Hall of the Institute López Piñero "Melancholy and society" presentation by Wolf Lepenies. The act will count with the participation of José Luis Peset (Researcher professor at CSIC), Mikel Munárriz (President of the Spanish Association of Neuropsychiatry, AEN) and Enric Novella, professor of the Universitat de València and researcher of the Institute that have translated (in collaboration with María Luisa Vea), edited and written prologue book in the framework History Collection of the Spanish Association in Neuropsychiatric. It is about a classic work on historical sociology and the cultural history of melancholy, which offers a vast fresco of the relationships between sadness, boredom, intellectual activity, social order, the distribution of political power and utopian thought from the Renaissance to the present day. Combining (primarily) sociological interest, philosophical reflection and psychopathological analysis with great historical rigour and a dazzling use of multiple literary sources, its pages parade great theorists of Renaissance and Baroque melancholy such as Marsilio Ficino and Robert Burton, but also apparently disparate figures such as La Rochefoucauld, Natan de Gaza, Immanuel Kant, Maine de Biran, Marcel Proust, Paul Valéry, Arnold Gehlen or Susan Sontag. In this way, the successive historical incarnations assumed by melancholy in the transition to modernity and its progressive dissolution in the (today unembraceable) field of depression are examined in the light of a great variety of analytical resources that allow us to appreciate the very important role of sadness, inhibition and excess reflection in the configuration of contemporary subjectivity.
El próximo miércoles 26 de septiembre de 2018 a las 18 h. tendrá lugar al Salón de Actos del Instituto López Piñero la presentación de "Melancolía y sociedad", de Wolf Lepenies. El acto contará con la participación de José Luis Peset (Profesor de Investigación del CSIC), Mikel Munárriz (Presidente de la Asociación Española de Neuropsiquiatría, AEN) y Enric Novella, profesor de la Universitat de València e investigador del Instituto que ha traducido (en colaboración con María Luisa Vea), editado y prologado el libro dentro de la Colección de Historia de la Asociación Española de Neuropsiquiatría.
Se trata de una obra ya clásica sobre la sociología histórica y la historia cultural de la melancolía en la que se ofrece un vastísimo fresco de las relaciones entre la tristeza, el aburrimiento, la actividad intelectual, el orden social, la distribución del poder político y el pensamiento utópico desde el Renacimiento hasta nuestros días. Combinando el interés (primariamente) sociológico, la reflexión filosófica y el análisis psicopatológico con un gran rigor histórico y un uso deslumbrante de múltiples fuentes literarias, por sus páginas desfilan grandes teóricos de la melancolía renacentista y barroca como Marsilio Ficino y Robert Burton, pero también figuras aparentemente tan dispares como La Rochefoucauld, Natan de Gaza, Immanuel Kant, Maine de Biran, Marcel Proust, Paul Valéry, Arnold Gehlen o Susan Sontag. De este modo, las sucesivas encarnaciones históricas asumidas por la melancolía en el tránsito a la modernidad y su progresiva disolución en el (hoy inabarcable) campo de la depresión son examinadas a la luz de una gran variedad de recursos analíticos que permiten apreciar el importantísimo papel de la tristeza, la inhibición y el exceso de reflexión en la configuración de la subjetividad contemporánea.
