The University of Valencia (UV) is taking part in the first European Doctoral Day, an initiative that will henceforth be held every year on 13 May. The main aim is to highlight the role of doctoral students as drivers of scientific excellence, innovation and social progress, both within and outside the academic sphere.
The initiative stems from the need to build a shared European identity and to highlight that the doctoral community is essential to securing Europe’s scientific, economic and industrial future.
For this first edition, over 170 activities have been organised across Europe, registered on the Eurodocday.org platform and available free of charge. At the University of Valencia, the initiative to join in has been spearheaded by the Doctoral School, led by Mariam Tórtola.
"The first celebration of European Doctoral Day highlights the importance of doctoral training for Europe’s scientific, technological and social development. Doctoral students make a decisive contribution to generating knowledge, innovation and solutions to global challenges. At the University of Valencia’s Doctoral School, we reaffirm our commitment to doctoral research of excellence, which is open, international and at the service of society,” emphasises Mariam Tórtola.
This event aims to inspire European and international students to embark on doctoral studies, as well as to promote the recognition of doctoral degrees by employers, and to showcase the diversity of career paths and the social impact of doctoral students.
Background
Originating in France, the initiative also commemorates the origins of the PhD in Europe, as well as the cultural and intellectual richness that defines the scientific landscape. Academic networks representing the doctoral community across the continent have come together to make this first edition possible, which was announced a year ago.
