The overall goal of this Doctoral Programme is to provide with a solid essential training in Physics, which covers both the basic scientific aspects and the more practical and technological ones. Generally, these studies of this Doctoral Programme empower students for specialized occupational activity, enable them for doing basic research and/or applied to Physics and in cross-disciplinary scientific fields, both in the public sector and in the private one, and increase the training for teaching in its different levels, specially the university level. These goals are specially focused in the scope of the scientific areas of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Nuclear Physics, Physics of Elementary Particles, Optics, Photonics, Physics of Materials and Theoretical Physics.
The Programme consists of a teaching stage and a research stage. The Master's Degree in Advanced Physics offered by the University of Valencia is the teaching stage of this Doctoral Programme.
The research period is set up towards the elaboration of a doctoral thesis Project. It includes a teaching activity ruled, complementary of the training period, structured in seminars (see Training Activities).
The Official Postgraduate Programme (POP) in Physics has its historical origin in the union of two doctoral programmes, the one in Theoretical and Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics, with Quality Award of the Ministry of Education and Science since 2003 (MCD2003-00036), and the one in Photonics: fundamentals and devices, with Quality Award since 2004 (MCD2004-00158).
The resulting programme, Official Postgraduate Programme in Physics, was awarded with the Quality Award by the Ministry of Education and Science in 2006 (MCD2006-00575) and its renewal was granted until the academic year 2011/2012 (B.O.E. 12/11/2008).
Nowadays, it has the Excellence Mention (MEE2011-0010) by the Ministry of Education for the academic years 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14.
From a regulatory point of view, the Doctoral Programmes of Theoretical and Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics and of Photonics: fundamentals and devices complied with the Royal Decree 778/1998. The resulting Official Postgraduate Programme in Physics complies with the Royal Decree 56/2005. This programme was adapted to the regulation of the Royal Decree 1393/2007 and subsequently to the Royal Decree 99/2011. On the basis of this last regulation the verification of our studies was formulated, which was approved by the ANECA last 6 June 2013.
