On April 25 and 26, a "German-Spanish Symposium on Functional Hybrid Nanomaterials" took place at the ICMUV. In this bilateral symposium, researchers from Germany and Spain discussed and shared their opinions on the state of the art and future directions in the development of functional hybrid nanomaterials
Even if the term “organic/inorganic hybrid nanomaterial” has become incredibly popular in the last years, the combination of organic and inorganic matter at the nanoscopic scale is not new. Indeed, nature has been fabricating hybrid materials since the origins of life. For instance, bone, nacre, and corals are typical examples of this phenomenon. Inspired by nature, chemists and materials scientists investigate the synergy between different organic and inorganic building blocks to fabricate new materials.
The symposium included keynote lectures by Prof. Katharina Landfester (director of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz), Prof. Helmut Cölfen (University of Konstanz), Prof. Silvia Gross (University of Padova and visiting fellow of the Justus Liebig University of Giessen), and Prof. Werner E. G. Müller (University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz). In addition, there were invited lectures of renowned researchers from German and Spanish institutions, including the University of Valencia, the University of Córdoba, the Ludwig-Maximilians-UniversitätMünchen, IMDEA Nanociencia, and the Complutense University of Madrid.
The opening ceremony of the event counted with the presence of the Vicepresident of Innovation and Transfer of the University of Valencia (Prof. Maria Dolores Real), the Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry (Prof. Adela Mauri), and the Director of the ICMUV (Prof. Ana Cros).
The symposium was held in the context of the inauguration of the Max Planck Partner Group on Colloidal Methods for Multifunctional Materials (CM3-Lab), headed by Dr. Rafael Muñoz-Espí, researcher of the ICMUV. The laboratory is sponsored by the Max Planck Partner Group Program of the Max Planck Society.
