The Laboratory of Fiber Optics (LFO) was created in 1987 in the Department of Applied Physics and Electromagnetism of the Faculty of Physics, at the University of Valencia. At present, the LFO is part of the Materials Science Institute of the University of Valencia. All the members of the LFO belong to the Faculty of Physics. The LFO has the equipment for the fabrication of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and special fiber-optics components based on acousto-optic interaction, photo-inscription of diffraction gratings and fiber tapering.

The research activity of the Laboratory of Fiber Optics (LFO) follows two main lines:
-
The development of optical fiber technologies to make available special fibers and fiber components,
-
The development of fiber lasers, special fiber light sources, and biosensors, exploiting the properties of in-fiber acousto-optics, high Q whispering gallery modes resonators, photonic crystal fibers, tapered fibers, and special fiber gratings.
