Where do I read and what do I write for? Analysis of the reading medium, writing tasks and executive functions in the process of textual production and in the quality of the text produced in integration tasks

Different factors intervene simultaneously in the integration writing process. For example, it has been shown that the medium or support where texts are read affects performance. Something similar has been observed with the characteristics of the tasks and also with cognitive functioning variables such as Working Memory, Planning or Inhibitory Control. In that sense, if writing is studied as a dynamic and complex process that is constantly changing, the effect of these interacting factors must be considered. However, information on how these variables interact to affect the writing process and the quality of the written product is scarce. Given this gap, we have developed a research proposal that aims to evaluate the main and interaction effects of the reading medium (paper and digital), the communicative purpose of the tasks (informative and persuasive), and executive functioning on the writing process and on the quality of the text produced by college students during a source integration task. To analyze the writing process, we used the keystroke logging (KSL) technique that allows us to non-intrusively capture behavioral measures in computer writing (fluency and pauses). To analyze the quality of the written product, two judges evaluate in parallel the formal aspects and the level of integration of the texts produced by the students. Finally, with our project we hope to contribute to the knowledge of the participation of different factors in writing and to help in the generation of teaching proposals that incorporate the relevance of the process for the elaboration of written products.

Bio

Ángel Valenzuela holds a Ph.D. in Human Sciences and a Master in Educational Policy and Management (Universidad de Talca, Chile). He is professor of Spanish and Communication and Licentiate in Education (Universidad de Tarapacá, Chile). Postdoctoral Fondecyt researcher at the Cognitive Sciences Research Center (CICC) of the Faculty of Psychology, Universidad de Talca. His research focuses on the cognitive processes involved in reading and writing in high school and higher education students. He is currently investigating the effects of the reading medium, the communicative purpose of the tasks and individual differences in the process of textual production and in the quality of the text produced.
