Amadeo Sena, Sergi Morais and Angel Maquieira, IDM researchers, in collaboration with the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (BIOTECMED) of the University of Valencia and CIBERER, have developed test strips that determine the presence of allergens in food. The test, which will cost one euro, can be done anywhere and the results are read with a mobile phone. The developed test strip detects almond and peanut, and has been evaluated in energy bars and cookies, but, looking to the future, its creators say it could be easily adapted for other allergens.
