Teaching: key element of the master’s degree

Teaching consists of the transmission of knowledge from the teacher to the students (from the point of view of our interests of the Master’s Degree in Research in Specific Didactics). This transmission process is based on perception: they can be oral and written.    All taken together is a communication process that presents facts, ideas, techniques and skills systematically to students that form human knowledge.

There are numerous teaching methods. This is the most discussed aspect of teaching, since in every century a different method was used and the previous methods were criticised.  How to teach? Which role has the teacher in front of the student? These are very discussed issues in the teaching world that draw a very different panorama depending on the answer. There are theories pointing out that the student is a simple “spectator” and internalises everything the teacher says while there are other theories that assure that a trust relationship between emitter and receiver must be established and the transmission of knowledge must come from both parts.

The most known teaching methods are based on the way of reasoning. The deductive method faces the studied issue from general to particular aspects, the inductive method presents the studied subject using particular cases, suggesting the general principle that governs them, and the analogue or comparative method presents particular data that allow to establish comparisons that lead to a conclusion based on similarity.

Regarding the subject coordination, the logical method structures the facts in ascending and consequent order, and the facts are presented from the simplest to the most complex. The psychological method presents the facts in an order closer to the interests, needs and experiences, not following a logical order.

Teaching has been crucial in the history of humanity and keeps having this maximum priority in our current society. How to share knowledge and the exact definition of the processes by which the student learns are basic aspects of this master’s degree. The Master’s Degree in Research in Specific Didactics is addressed to the excellence of the teaching body and its purpose is to break the established schemes in teaching: the student it is not a mere spectator absorbing everything the teacher transmits. The learning process is multidirectional and comprises many more factors than only the emitter and receiver.
