The UV expresses its grief for the victims of the Valencia fire

The city of Valencia has declared three official days of grieving for the fire that erupted in two residential buildings yesterday afternoon. The Universitat de València will participate in these days of grief and will suspend all official instructional events and cultural activities scheduled for the next three days. The Principal of the UV, Mª Vicenta Mestre, has conveyed to the mayor of Valencia, the president of the Generalitat and the delegate of the Spanish government the UV’s unwavering support of the victims, as well as the members of the university community that were affected by the fire.

Yesterday afternoon, 22 February, a large-scale fire spread acrooss two residential buildings located in Valencia, causing several deaths and numerous injuries.

The Universitat de València will participate in the three official days of grieving announced by the Valencia City Council. All of the flags that reside outside of UV buildings will be flown and half mast.

As part of this institutional grieving, the UV has suspended all institutional events and cultural activities planned for the next three days, including the attendance of members of the Executive Council at public events.

Suspended activities

The inauguration of the “falla inmaterial” scheduled for this Friday at the La Nau Cultural Centre has been postponed.

The conference “Amores y afectos. Relatos íntimos a través del archivo personal de Jaquín Sorolla”, which was scheduled for this afternoon in the Aula Magna, and the colloquium “Coven! Witches in popular culture” organised by the UV Comic Society will take place on later dates.

The training sessions for student representatives that is scheduled for Saturday, 24 Abril has also been cancelled, and will be rescheduled later on.

The Universitat de València will remain open and continue its regular teaching, research and knowledge transfer activities, maintaining, as well, the operation of UV services. However, all recreational activities that follow a scheduled programme, such as conèixerUV, have been suspended.

Offer of assistance

The principal of the UV has contacted the university members who have been affected by the fire and has expressed the solidarity of the university, offering support services at this difficult time.

The Principal of the UV, Mª Vicenta Mestre, has conveyed to the mayor of Valencia, Mª José Catalá, the president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, and the Valencian Delegate of the Spanish Government, Pilar Bernabé, the UV’s offer to provide the services of the network of UV clinics to anyone affected by the fire.
