Summary:

Healing remedies have been used throughout the entire history of human evolution. The earliest known remedies date back to the Neolithic period, when active ingredients began to be used instinctively. However, as understanding and research into these substances advanced, their use became increasingly empirical.

The 19th century marked the golden age of the development of medicines as we know them today, as they began to be prepared on a small scale in pharmacies and later (during the 20th century), on an industrial scale. Nowadays, there are many different pharmaceutical forms, such as syrups, creams, aerosols, tablets, capsules, suppositories and single-dose sachets, all of which can still be produced on a small scale — and, indeed, many pharmacies continue to make them.

In this workshop, students will learn how to prepare a pharmaceutical form (capsule or ointment) while also gaining new insights into how medicines work.

Objectives:

  • Understand what happens to a medicine inside the human body. We will answer questions such as “Does the medicine know where it needs to go?”

  • Prepare a pharmaceutical form (placebo) on a small scale, using laboratory materials and working appropriately.

The workshop will be led by three lecturers from the Department of Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Technology and Parasitology: Ana Melero Zaera, Antonio Guillot and María José Cano Cebrián.

Target audience: Based on the content and focus of the workshop, it is most suitable for students in Year 4 of secondary education (ESO) or Year 1 of upper-secondary education (Batxillerat).

Maximum number of participants: We have equipment for 6 workstations, each accommodating up to 4 students. If there are more than 24 participants, feasibility will need to be assessed.

Venue: Educational centre
