Measuring impossible distances

The measurement of distances is key to Physics, as we depend on it to be able to determine speeds, energies and other associated quantities. However, it can sometimes be a very complicated task. In this talk we will discuss various situations in which a good dose of wit had to be used to measure a distance: the diameter of the Earth, the distance to distant galaxies and the small variations of length that occur when a gravitational wave arrives in our planet.

The neutrino, the ghost particle

Neutrinos have been amazing us for almost a century. These particles are very copiously produced in places like the Sun and are able to cross large quantities of matter without interacting. Due to its "ghostly" character, we still do not know many things about neutrinos nowadays. This talk will be devoted to the story of this mysterious particle. We will start with Pauli's hypothesis in a famous letter, we will talk about its experimental discovery and the surprises offered by neutrino oscillations, and conclude with a review of his current situation.

Brief CV

Avelino Vicente Montesinos specialised in Theoretical Particle Physics and obtained his PhD at the University of Valencia in 2011. He has extensive international experience, with research stays in Japan, Portugal, Switzerland, Germany, France and Belgium. He is currently a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the Institute of Corpuscular Physics, a joint centre between the Spanish Research Council and the University of Valencia, and a professor at the Faculty of Physics of the latter. His research is the theoretical search for new scenarios beyond the standard model of particle physics, with special emphasis on problems related to supersymmetry, the mass of neutrinos, flavor physics and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It has more than 60 publications in high-impact scientific journals. In addition, he does an important dissemination task, being one of the coordinators of the IFIC's dissemination blog and the President of the Sapiencia Association.
