Globally, 1.9 billion adults are overweight, of which 650 million are obese, with the consequent repercussions on health and the economy. The treatment of obesity involves strategies such as physical activity and dietary planning, as long as they are done by health professionals. In recent decades, miraculous diets have appeared, which originated at the beginning of the twentieth century, and which can lead to health problems for people. A practical way to detect them is that they promise rapid weight loss (more than 1 kg per week), claim that it is carried out without effort, have excessive energy restrictions and exclude foods or nutrients from the diet for organism. This talk will allow a review on diets or other slimming methods that can affect health.

 

 

Brief CV

José Miguel Soriano del Castillo is a Graduate in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and a Bachelor and Doctor in Pharmacy, with an extraordinary award in 2003, from the University of Valencia. He is a full professor in the Nutrition and Bromatology Department of the University of Valencia. He is an Academic Full Member and Honorary Member of the Spanish Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and an Academic Full Member of the Academy of Pharmacy of the Valencian Community. He is the Director of the University Clinic of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Physiotherapy (CUNAFF) of the Lluís Alcanyís Foundation of the University of Valencia, of the Observatory of Nutrition and Food Security for the Developing World of the University of Valencia, based in Egypt and Madagascar, from the Gastrolab-Fernando Sapiña of the Materials Science Institute of the University of Valencia and the Food&Health Lab, promoted by the International Excellence Campus VLC/CAMPUS, through the program for the creation of Innovative Ecosystems funded by the Ministry of Culture and Sport. In addition to being the Co-Director of the Mixed Research Unit in Endocrinology, Nutrition and Clinical Dietetics of the Health Research Institute of La Fe-University of Valencia. He has carried out teaching-research stays at the French Food Safety Agency (France), the Higher Institute of Health (Italy), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) (Italy), the National Research Center (Egypt), the Akershus University College (Norway), the National University of La Plata (Argentina), the National Maternal-Perinatal Institute (Peru) and the University of Salvador. He is the editor of ten books and has published more than 200 book chapters and articles in national and international journals. He has received several awards: Research Award of the Egg Studies Institute (2004), Award of the Charitable-Teaching Association "Professor Vicente Callao" of the Ibero-American Academy of Pharmacy (2004), the XI Award València se Solidariza-Modalitat social research grant from Valencia City Council (2008), Teaching Excellence Award from the Ministry of Education-Social Council of the University of Valencia (2009), the Cascajares Award for young researchers of the Food Microbiology Group of the Spanish Society of Microbiology (2010) and achieved, for the coordination and publication of El gran libro de la Horchata y la Chufa de Valencia (University of Valencia, 2014), the international award to the best book in the World at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards (2016).
