In charge of Ismael Llorens (President of the Independent Life Spanish Federation (FEVI) and Katja Villatoro (Secretary of FEVI and of the Master in Dependence Social-healthcare) The world philosophy of Independent Life is a theoretical practical thinking around the human reality, called functional diversity. Women and men with functional diversity claim for the individual and collective right to have active and independent lives, being included in the community with the necessary human supports (which is called Personal Assistance) in order to exercise citizenship under equal conditions. The Independent Life is based on basic principles that are: human and civil rights, self-determination; self-help (between equals); possibility to exercise power (empowerment); responsibility for one’s own life and actions; right to assume risks; and to live within the community. The Independent Life Movement was born in the USA, during the sixties and the seventies, as a new social movement of people with functional diversity that fights for the emancipation and empowerment. Its main objective was then to take people with functional diversity out of the hospital and institution, and even out of their own homes, where they were committed, in order to bring them back to a life of community participation. It was a radical answer to the social stereotypes created from ideas such as: a person with functional diversity can not work, can not take care of her/himself, can not be in charge of her/his own life. In the workshop designed for students of the degree in Social Work, we will think about Independent Life meaning on people with functional diversity, we will work the concepts and go deeper in its potential. One of the social worker functions is the creations of habitable and empowering environments for everyone, the claiming of rights for all, the reduction of barriers and the work with the civil society. In this workshop we will talk about all these aspects. Coordinated by: Dra. Sacramento Pinazo-Hernandis. Professor in the Department of Social Psychology.
