Two researchers in the University Institute of Corpuscular Physics (IFIC), which is a joint centre attached to Universitat de València and the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), have been awarded two of the ‘Premios de la Física’ 2011 awards by Real Sociedad Española de Física (RSEF) and Fundación BBVA. The awards ceremony is took place yesterday, May 24th. The award-winning are the full professor of theoretical physics at Universitat de València, José Bernabéu Alberola, and the doctor at IFIC and currently researcher at Pennsylvania State University, Iván Agulló.
The full university professor at Universitat de València, José Bernabéu Alberola, has been awarded the RSEF medal, which is the highest mention given by this scientific institution, thanks to his more than 200 publications in the field of elementary particles and his work in institutions like CERN. Iván Agulló, doctor from IFIC and currently researcher at Pennsylvania State University, has received a mention as early stage researcher (Premio Investigador Novel Física Teórica). Founded in 1950, IFIC is one of the pioneer centres of experimental particles physics in Spain.
The Real Sociedad Española de Física’s medal is an award worth 15,000 Euros and it honours the research career and collaboration with the institution. Some of the results of Bernabéu’s findings show quantum effects non-decoupling related to spontaneous symmetry breaking in charge of the interactions, effects which are later measured and confirmed by the experiments LEP in the CERN (European Laboratory of Particle Physics).
The panel of judges based its decision on the outstanding scientific contribution of Bernabéu to the research of high energy physics, his work implementing the discipline in Spain, and his leadership in scientific projects, both Spanish and European. The judges wished to stress Bernabéu’s work in the creation of research teams and his cooperation with the RSEF.
The prize 'Investigador Novel Física Teórica', worth 4,000 Euros, is for Iván Agulló. In 2011. Agulló became the first Spanish receiving the Gravity Research Foundation’s prize. Scientists such as Stephen Hawking (1971), Roger Penrose (1975), Abhay Ashtekar (1977) and George Smoot (1993), received this same award.
Real Sociedad Española de Física, created in 1903, gives awards and mentions to those members outstanding in their professional activities. The prizes are being awarded since 1958.
