OPAL is carrying out some follow-up studies to the graduates who finished their studies in 2002 and 2003 under the framework of the study Estudio de Inserción Laboral de los Titulados y Tituladas de la Universitat. This study has found that 66% of the graduates have kept their jobs since 2002.
The first follow-up study was carried out two years after finishing the studies (between 2004 and 2005), the second one was done six years after (between 2008 and 2009), and the third is being carried ten years after the end of their studies (between 2011 and 2012).
Up to now, 379 graduates from 33 different degrees have been surveyed. The study has focused on the employment rate and the kind of jobs.
Regarding the employment rate, data shows variations on the percentage of graduates employed throughout the three periods of time. In the first one, 75% had a job, but this rate increased to 91.6% in the second period of time, and decreased to 86.5% in the third. Data has also shown that 66% of the graduates kept their jobs during the three periods of time.
About the jobs quality, asked the ones who are keeping their jobs throughout the three periods of time, there exist variations regarding the quality of the jobs (meaning jobs requiring higher studies and being related to their field of knowledge). 71.2% had a quality job in the first period of time; 78.8% had a quality job in the second; and 77.6% had it in the third.
The increase to the percentage of graduates with quality jobs in the two first periods of time suggests that the accumulation of human and social capital makes access to quality jobs easier. The increase of to the percentage of graduates with quality jobs in the third period of time though shows the effects of the economic recession.
On graduates’ satisfaction with their jobs, taking an scale from 0 (unsatisfied) to 10 (fully satisfied), 7.1 was the rating for the jobs in the first period of time, while 7.9 and 7.7 was the rate for the second and third respectively.
Data with the results of the three follow-up studies over 52 degrees will be available by 2013.
