The one-day general strike celebrated last May 22nd throughout Spain, was massively supported by Universitat de València. The strike had been called by education trade unions and had the support of Universitat de València, along with all the unions represented in it, the General Student Assembly and the main student associations represented in the University Senate.
The strike was preceded on Monday by some protests carried out by several student groups which camped at the different Universitat’s campus and a pot-banging protest at Tarongers Campus. These actions were not only massively supported by students, but by both the teaching staff and the administration and services staff.
The Principal’s team stressed that these actions were carried out with normality; they have also emphasized the commitment of UV with public university, and particularly with the current model of pubic university.
The Principal recalled that the public university system has always voiced its opposition to the measures adopted by the Spanish Government asking repeatedly the withdrawal of the Royal Decree. Last May the 8th, the Universitat’s Governing Council showed its disagreement with the measures and it reiterated the same idea on May 21st.
Last Tuesday, the general strike finished with a demonstration of thousands of people. They protested against the budget cuts in education and they showed their support to the public education system.
Moreover, the General Student Assembly, which is the students highest representative body, informed of the meeting they are having today, May 23rd, with the general director of universities in the Valencian Community in order to discuss the implementation of the fee increases at the Valencian universities.
Universitat de València’s press report includes the information published in the different newspapers about the strike. Ràdio Universitat also followed the actions, it can be listened to on mediauni.uv.es/vid/1638v
