Throughout the six days of concerts, Serenates festival, organized by Universitat de València, Institut Valencià de la Música, and Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana, has gathered more than 2,500 people in the Gothic cloister of Centre del Carmen.
Serenates festival ended last Saturday with the performance of the University Choir, which is conducted by Francesc Valldecabres. This choir has reached its full seating capacity in every performance and long lines of people waited at the entrance to collect the free invitations.
The maximum capacity of the Gothic cloister in Centre del Carme is 450 people for most of the concerts, except those given by the Universitat de València’s Philharmonic Orchestra, when the maximum capacity is 400 people.
Indeed this Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Hilari García, was in charge of the festival’s opening ceremony last Monday. It gave a concert dedicated to the great Latin American composer of XXth century.
On June 26th, the band Harmonia del Parnàs, directed by Marian Rosa, offered a concert titled Ícaro del amor. This concert made a trip throughout XVII and XVIII centuries Spanish music, taking the suggestive love topic as the thread.
On Wednesday, June 27th, the brass quintet Spanish Brass, along with Pepe el Butifarra, are going to play the programme Metalls d’Estil. Several pieces composed by Valencian musicians and inspired in traditional Valencian works make up the programme.
On June 28th, Universitat de València’s Philharmonic Orchestra is playing again, this time the chamber section of it, directed by Hilari García as well. The concert is going to have Händel’s concert for harp and orchestra, having the solo Onofre Casadas. This is going to be followed by Britten, Gounod and Xostakóvitx pieces for chamber orchestra.
On June 29th, it is the turn of Capella de Ministres, directed by Carles Magraner. The programme was titled Madre de Deus: Lírica I litúrgica de l’Espanya medieval. It offered a journey around the works written in Spain from XIIth to XVth centuries.
The festival ended on June 30th with the concert of the University Choir directed by Francesc Valldecabres. The programme included the religious poliphony from XVIth century – like the mass by Stravinsky – to the series of the Azor Piazzolla’s angel.
The key to success of Serenates festival is a great variety of styles played by Valencian bands and orchestras. The festival is 30 years old. In this edition, Serenates has been celebrated at Centre del Carmen because of the works being conducted at La Nau cultural centre.
