Yesterday, June 28, La Nau’s Aula Magna hosted, at 18:30, the lecture ‘El español internacional y la selección de variantes en los medios’ (International Spanish and the varieties selection in the media). Raúl Ávila, researcher at Colegio de México and coordinator of the international project ‘Difusión del español por los medios’ was the lecturer. The event was chaired by Ángel López, full university professor of linguistics at Universitat de València, and Carolina Moreno, director of Departament de Teoria dels Llenguatges i Ciències de la Comunicació.
400 million people speak Spanish, but not all of them are native Spanish speakers nor use the same Spanish variety. In order to make that potential to develop easily and respecting the autonomy of everyone it would be necessary to have an international Spanish language accepted by everybody. Up to now, there are three possible choices which differe sometimes on the most important aspects. One is that by the Real Academia de la Lengua Española, the other is suggested by the media (called ‘español internacional’), and the last one comes from the Spanish used in film dubbing (the so-called ‘español neutro’). The lecture will analyze this problem, which is particularly relevant for journalists and the bilingual communities.
Raúl Ávila is lecturer and researchers at Colegio de México and a member of Academia Mexicana de Ciencias. Among their research lines, he works at the Spanish language dissemination project ‘Difusión del Español por los medios’, where he is coordinator. Some of his published works are De la imprenta a la Internet: la lengua española y los medios de comunicación masiva (2006) and Variación léxica internacional del español.
Carolina Moreno is full university professor of journalism and director of Departament de Teoria dels Llenguatges i Ciències de la Comunicació at Universitat de València. She is an expert in science and technology communication and she usually collaborates with Fundación Española de Ciencia y Tecnología and Organización de Estados Iberoamericanos.
Ángel López García-Molins is full university professor of linguistics at Universitat de València. He has been awarded many prizes both at national and international level, and he is member of several linguistic institutions. He has published many works and papers such as El boom de la lengua española (2007), Pluricentrismo, hibridación y porosidad en la lengua española (2010) and Anglohispanos (2010).
